The first three are up and down the track, side to side across the spine, and in and out for depth. The fourth is time: how fast a stroke travels and how long it pauses at the end of it. That is why a 4D program can feel slow and deliberate in one mode and brisk in another without you changing the intensity.
Where you will and will not notice it
On the neck and shoulders the difference is obvious immediately. Along the lower back it matters most if you like deep, slow work. If you mainly want consistent, repeatable pressure and will run the same program every evening, a good 3D chair does that beautifully and costs less.
Dual mechanisms are a separate thing
Some chairs here pair 4D with two independent massage assemblies, so the upper and lower body are driven separately. Infinity calls its version Syner-D and the Kyota Nokori M980 uses the same idea. That is about coverage, not about depth control, and the two upgrades are worth judging separately.

Is a 4D massage chair worth the extra money over 3D?
It depends on how you will use it. 4D varies the speed and pause of each stroke, so the massage feels closer to hands and stays interesting over months of daily use. If you will run one favourite program every evening, 3D delivers that at a lower price. Running the same program on both, back to back, settles it faster than any comparison chart.
Do all 4D chairs feel the same?
No, and this surprises people. The mechanism is only part of it. Track length, roller shape, airbag coverage and how the manufacturer tunes its programs change the result more than the 4D label does. Two 4D chairs at the same price can feel completely different.

What is 4D plus L-track?
Two independent upgrades that often appear together. 4D controls how the rollers move; an L-track controls how far down your body they travel, continuing past the lower back and under the seat. If glutes and hamstrings matter to you, look for both.
