A body scan runs before the massage does. The chair maps the position of your shoulders and the length of your spine, then places the rollers against that map rather than against an average. On paper it sounds like a marketing feature. In practice it is the difference between airbags landing on your shoulders and airbags landing on your ears.
It matters most at the extremes of height. If you are well under or well over average, an unscanned chair applies the same pattern it applies to everyone, and the neck rollers end up somewhere other than your neck.

Most implementations find shoulder height and spine length, which together decide where the neck and shoulder work happens. Some go further and map body width for the airbags. The chair then stores that profile, so a household with two very different bodies does not have to re-fight the chair every session.
Why it is not universal
Scan hardware costs money, so it appears more often as you move up a range and disappears at the entry level. That is worth knowing before assuming a brand carries it throughout: check the specific model, not the badge on the side.
The test that settles it
Sit in a scanned chair and an unscanned one on the same visit and run the neck program on both. If the rollers find the spot on one and miss on the other, you have your answer in about thirty seconds, and no specification sheet would have told you.

What does body scan do in a massage chair?
It measures your shoulder position and spine length before the program begins, then positions the rollers to match. The goal is that the neck and shoulder work happens where your neck and shoulders actually are rather than where an average body would put them.
Do I need body scan if I am average height?
It helps less the closer you are to the range a chair was designed around. It matters a great deal if you are notably shorter or taller, and it also helps when more than one person uses the chair.
Is body scan the same as AI?
No, though they often appear together in marketing. A scan measures you once at the start. The AI claims some manufacturers make describe adjusting during the session. Only a handful of chairs on our floor specify genuine AI, and we say which ones rather than repeating the word.
Can I try scanned and unscanned chairs side by side?
Yes, and it is the fastest way to decide whether the feature is worth the money for your body. Both sit on one floor at our San Jose showroom.
